Carving at Snowfest Again, Just A Little Warmer

Douglas will again be in Frankenmuth January 26th and 27th for Snowfest, he will be moving from the NCAA Ice Carving Championships to the Z Cafe at Zehnders Restaurant carving fruits and vegetables for the everyone to see.  You will have multiple opportunities over the two days to see Douglas, make sure you say hi to him while you are there!

Food Network Challenge Series

Douglas competed on the Food Network Challenge Series twice in 2006.

In May 2006 Douglas competed in the Food Network Fantasy Fruit Sculpture Challenge in Kona, Hawaii that aired in February of this year.  He competed against three of the nations top fruit and vegetable carvers for the right to be called the Inaugural Fantasy Fruit Sculpture Champion.  With the luck of the Hawaiian Tiki Gods, Douglas and his partner Executive Chef Doug Ganhs were able to over come the odds and win the Challenge, they guarded paradise and guided the team to victory!

In August 2006 Douglas was at Disneyland in California where he and a team of chefs from around the nation successfully broke the Guinness Book of World Records for the Tallest Popcorn Structure by recreating Mickey Mouse, the Sorcerer's Apprentice.  Visit the Food Network link:

“Beginners Fruit & Vegetable Carving”

 

This four hour class is an excellent opportunity for you to get started in the awesome art of Fruit and Vegetable Carving, whether you are a Culinarian or a homebody, young or old you will be amazed at what you will make.  We will concentrate on knife techniques that will allow you to produce beautiful flowers and leaves; we will then discuss techniques to display your creations for everyone to enjoy.  Dress is casual, I suggest bringing a camera and a box to take your creations home with you, class fee includes materials to be carved and a copy of Douglas’ Instructional Disk for you to keep.  Tools will be available for purchase at the class.

 

 

“Melon Design; Relief”

 

In this four hour class we focus on removing material from the face of our medium to achieve dimension through shading.  The class will teach you the techniques to achieve incredible silhouettes, faces, logos, and abstract designs through the use of standard and specialty tools, templates and lighting.  We will discuss display options and display safety.  Dress is casual, I suggest bringing a camera and a box to take your creations home with you, class fee includes materials to be carved and a copy of Douglas’ Instructional Disk for you to keep.  Tools will be available for purchase at the class.

 

 

“Edible Fruit Bouquets”

 

Here’s your chance to be the party favorite with the gift of a centerpiece display that can be eaten.  At the completion of this three hour class you will have learned the techniques for choosing, cleaning, and portioning the fruits, assembly and packaging, storage and transportation of your bouquet. The class will touch briefly on melon carving as it pertains to being the vessel for the bouquet.  Dress is casual, I suggest bringing a camera and a box to take your creations home with you, class fee includes materials to be carved.  Tools will be available for purchase at the class.

 

 

“Beginners Pumpkin Carving”

 

This three hour class you the basics in pumpkin carving including selection, cleaning, carving, lighting and preservation.  A great class for the pre and early teenager, creativity and knife safety techniques will be stressed through-out the time of the class.  Dress is casual, I suggest bringing a camera and a box to take your creations home with you, class fee includes materials to be carved.  Tools will be available for purchase at the class.

 

 

“Advanced Pumpkin Carving”

 

As a continuation of the “Beginners” class; alternative carving, lighting and preservation techniques will be discussed and practiced during this three hour class.  Surface relief and dimensional sculpting will be the main focus of the alternative carving techniques promoting light intensity to achieve desired effects.  Dress is casual, I suggest bringing a camera and a box to take your creations home with you, class fee includes materials to be carved.  Tools will be available for purchase at the class.
